The Two Amigos (Standup Review: “Steve Martin & Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life”)

Two legends of comedy whose friendship spans over 30 years come together for one night of non-partisan merriment and a walk down memory lane. Steve Martin and Martin Short may have nothing to prove but they still have what it takes.

SnapShot Plot

It’s a mix of nostalgia, quick-witted banter, live music and plenty of shtick that makes Steve Martin & Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget the Rest of Your Life such a delight. The two legendary performers met over 20 years ago on the set of the movie, The Three Amigos (also co-starring Chevy Chase) and have been close ever since, so one can imagine it was only a matter of time before they’d collaborate on a live standup show for Netflix. Or, as Martin Short explains it: ” We call the show, If We’d Saved We Wouldn’t Be Here”.

Parting Shot

Executive produced by SNL’s Lorne Michaels, the show is at times too scripted, but you forgive those moments because there are so many moments of inspired hilarity. Brace yourself for Short as he performs an outrageous musical number entitled “Step-Brother to Jesus” as well as the couch talk portion and the personal family photos and images from their early careers. Martin also performs a live banjo medley and then is joined onstage by The Steep Canyon Rangers, accompanied by jazz pianist, Jeff Babko. There’s something for everyone in this short comedy/musical performance, proving why these two have had the impressive and long-lasting careers that legends are made of.

Steve Martin & Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget the Rest of Your Life is presently streaming on Netflix.
